Elafonisos: A Traditional Island Wedding

Elafonisos is a small island at the SE end of the Peloponnese, N. Laconia, just 600 m. from Pounda, which is also the access point to it (9′).

Alternatively, the famous sandy beach of Simos, in Sarakiniko Bay, is only 4.5 km away and also has a campsite (with a cafe - restaurant).

At St. Spyridon, the celebration of the Sacrament of Marriage (or Baptism) is permitted on all days of the year, sixth from the great Despotic celebrations, anniversaries and festivals of Elafonisos.

St. Spyridon, the “Saint” for the locals, is the patron saint of Elafonisos and celebrates on 12/12.

In the three-day events for the “Second Anniversary July 6-9“", which take place at St. Spyridon, no weddings (or baptisms) are allowed.

The double celebration concerns the historic anniversary of Liberation of Elafonisos (6/8/1850), where wreaths are laid and a memorial service is held in the area surrounding the church.

At the port of Elafonisos, in the last 10 days of August, the “Fishermen's Festival"”, with live music, food and dancing.

Elafonisos has the largest fishing fleet in Laconia, which is why the celebration has an official character.

On 15/8 her chapel celebrates Panagia Katonisiotissa (Assumption of the Virgin Mary), on the beach of Panagia, with a procession of the icon and events from the eve (14/8).
