Preveza – Saitan Pazar, the Town's Famous Alley

Saitan or Seitan Pazar (the Devil's Bazaar) is the pedestrian lane in the historic center of Preveza, part of Christou Kontou Street, near the church of Ag. Charalambos.

Cobbled, bustling, drowning in bougainvillea and fairy lights, lined with shops and outdoor tables, it is the town's most traditional lane. Come for coffee, food at the ouzeris (the sardine and the Amvrakikos shrimp, known as gambari, are top picks), shopping and a stroll.

It took the name Saitan Pazar during Ottoman rule, from a harsh and violent Turkish governor of the town. According to the plaque placed by the Municipality, one night in that era the residents covered the cobblestones with soap; the next morning, as the governor rode past on his horse, it slipped and he fell, crying out “Saitan Pazar” (Devil's Bazaar).

In Satan Bazaar, in the house on Christou Kontou Street, stayed for the 32 days of his time in Preveza the poet Kostas Karyotakis (Tripoli, 1896 – Preveza, 1928), from 18-6-28 to 21-7-28 (the date of his suicide). In Dardanelia Square, very close to the house, a bronze bust of the poet has been placed.
