Sarajevo, the "Jerusalem of Europe" in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The Sarajevo is located on the banks of the river Miljacka in the Dinaric Alps. It is the capital of "«Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina» or simply Bosnia. The state of "«Bosnia and Herzegovina» consists of 2 political entities, the «Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina» (Bosnian: Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina), the so-called Croat-Muslim Federation and the "«Serbian Democracy» (Croatian: Republika Srpska) that is, the Bosnian-Serbian, based in the city Banja Luka.

It is a multinational country, with 3 ethnicities, Bosnians (50%), Serbs (30%) and Croatians (15%), which are divided by religion. The Bosnian War (1992-1995) broke out between Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian. The "«Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina"» divided into 10 Cantons, one of which is the Sarajevo Canton. The Sarajevo took its name from the Turkish saraj or palace = palace. The founder of the city was the Ottoman governor, Isa-Beg Ishakovićwho shaped the Old City (1462). It is a multicultural city in which people of all religions coexist, mainly Muslims, Jews and Christians, hence the "«Jerusalem of Europe».

  • Latin Bridge or Princip's Bridge

An Ottoman bridge with a unique history. On June 28, 1914, a Bosnian Serb nationalist, Gavrilo Princip, killed Franz Ferdinand. of the Habsburgs (1863-1914), Archduke and heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Franz Ferdinand was with his wife Sophie in Sarajevo for an official visit. Gavrilo Princip killed them both at point-blank range as they were leaving the Town hall. After this, about a month later, Austria declared war on Serbia and World War I followed (address Obala Kulina bana bb).

  • Hadžiceland Mosque or Attorney Harčegg (1541-1561)

The Mosque is located next to the Ottoman Bridge Šrather-Coh my (16th) in the neighborhood Alifakovac, very close to the Turkish quarter Bašaršyes, but on the opposite (left) bank of the river. It was built during the time of the Ottoman governor (beg or bey), Gazi Husrev-beg and the tall minaret stands out from afar (Veliki Alifakovac, Old Town).

Restaurant with authentic Bosnian cuisine, next to the Mosque Hadžiceland (Vekil Harčova) and opposite the Town Hall (Bosnian: Vijećnica). The house is a representative example of architecture during the Ottoman period (Veliki Alifakovac 1).

  • Ashkenazi Ssynagogue (1902)

It was built in 1902 by Karlo Paržik (1857-1942) in pseudo-Moorish style. It is located on the left bank of the Miljacka and is the only active Synagogue in Sarajevo. The building was severely damaged in the 1992-1995 war but was renovated (Hamdije Kreševljakovića 59)

  • Emperor's Mosque or Tsar's Mosque (1457 & 1565)

The Emperor‘'‘s Mosque or Emperor's Mosque (Bosnian: Careva Džamija), was originally built in 1457, when the Ottoman governor was Isa Beg Isaković (founder of Sarajevo), during the reign of Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror. It was completely destroyed and rebuilt in 1565 during the reign of Sultan Suleiman I the Magnificent, to whom it was dedicated in his honor. The side rooms were added later (1800) and connected to the central prayer area (1848). In the cemetery, behind the mosque, is the tomb of Isa Beg Isaković. It is one of the oldest mosques in the country and is National Monument.

  • Church of St. Anthony of Padua - Franciscan Monastery

The Church of Saint Anthony of Padua (Bosnian: Church of St. Anthony Padua) was the 1th Catholic church in Sarajevo. It was built on the site of an old church (1853) and after a fire it was rebuilt on the same site in 1881. It was abandoned and rebuilt (1912-4) in the Gothic-Romanesque style by the famous Josip Vancaš (this was also his last work). The interior of the church, with its sculptures, dates from 1960. The stained glass windows are by the artist Ivo Dulčić (1915-1975). The adjacent Franciscan Monastery was built in 1894 by Alexander Wittek, in Neo-Gothic style and has an archive with old manuscripts and books. The church and monastery are a National Monument (Franjevačka 6, Bistrik district, behind the Emperor's Mosque, on the left bank).

  • Sarajevo Brewery Museum – HS Pivnica Restaurant

It was founded in 1864 as the 1th Brewery of Sarajevo, of Sarajevsko beer. The premises are a museum. In the same space operates the restaurant HS Pivnica (Franjevačka 15, behind the Franciscan Monastery)

  • Academy of Fine Arts

It was founded in 1972 and is part of University of Sarajevo. Since 1981 it has been housed in the renovated building of the old Evangelical Church (Obala Maka Dizdara 3, next to the Festina Lente Bridge, on the left bank of the Miljacka)

WHAT TO SEE ON THE RIGHT BANK OF THE RIVER

  • Bascarsija (1462), the old Turkish market of Sarajevo and the city's most popular tourist attraction. It is located on the right bank of the Miljacka River, in the Stari Grad (Old Town) Municipality.
  • Sebilj

The wooden fountain located in the square Bascarsija, at the beginning of the pedestrian street. It was built by the Ottoman architect Mehmed Pasha Kukavica and is National Monument. The pedestrian street Kazanžiluk, The oldest street in Sarajevo is full of shops, with bronze and ethical objects, souvenirs, jewelry stores, etc.

The Turkish quarter is full of tourists as it has restaurants (all serving traditional dishes) and many cafes for Bosnian café.

  • Gazi Husrev Bey's Bezistan

Closed shopping bazaar with ethical shops, jewelry stores, etc. It was built in 1540 during the Ottoman period and was part of Gazi Husrev Bey. Today it is called Dugi Bezistan and is National Monument.(entrance to the bazaar: from the street Gazi Husrev Bey's, Ferhadija and from Defenders of Sarajevo, Baščaršija district).

  • Brusa Bezistan (1551)

It was built by Rustem Pasha, the Grand Vizier of Suleiman I the Magnificent, to serve the silk trade that he himself developed in the Turkish city Bursa. The Brusa Bezistan is a stone building (29.5 x 20.5 m.), with 6 large and 2 smaller domes. Today it is Museum, with archaeological material from prehistory, antiquity and the Middle Ages. It is National Monument (Abadžiluk 10)

  • Gazi Husrev-begMosque (16th)

It was built between 1530-1 probably by the Persian architect of the Ottoman Empire, Alaeddin Ali Bey or  Acem Ali or Esir Ali (he also made the Yavuz Selim Mosque or Selim Mosque I of Constantinople). It is the largest historical mosque in the Balkans. The minaret of the mosque is 45 m high. During the siege of Sarajevo, it was one of the first buildings to be bombed. Its gradual reconstruction began in 1996. The interior decoration is recent (2001-2) and is attributed to the Bosnian farmer Hazim Numanagić.

The Austro-Hungarian decoration, dominated by the pseudo-Moorish style, remains only at the main entrance of the mosque.

  • Sarajevo Clock Tower or Sarajevo Clock Tower (17th)

It is a lunar clock that also shows the time of the Muslim prayer that takes place at sunset. It is located next to the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque and is National Monument.

  • The Old Orthodox Church (16th)

Dedicated to the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, it has a remarkable Ecclesiastical Museum (Mula Mustafe Bašeskije 59, Baščaršija).

  • Jewish Museum – Old Synagogue (1581)

The Old Synagogue (1581) or Old Temple (Bosnian: Stari Hram) was the 1th The city's synagogue and today the Jewish Museum (Velika avlija bb, on the right bank). Right next to it was built the New Synagogue (1821) or New Temple (Bosnian: Novi Hram) which was converted into the Novi Hram Gallery (Mula Mustafe Bašeskije 38). The active Ashkenazi Synagogue is located on the left bank of the river.

  • National Museum or Zemaljski Muzej Bosnia and Herzegovina

It was founded in 1888 and is the oldest museum in the country. It was designed by Karlo Paržik, in a Neo-Renaissance building and consists of 4 buildings, connected by terraces and a patio with a garden. The main exhibit is the rare Hebrew text Sarajevo Haggadah. It consists of 142 leaves of parchment, which include texts from the Bible, texts not related to the Bible, and poems by Jewish writers of the 10th century.thυ -13thυ century. It was purchased by the Museum in 1894 from a wealthy family in Sarajevo. After analysis of the leaves, it was determined that it was made in Medieval Spain, most likely in Barcelona (1350), probably as a wedding gift between two prominent families of the time. It changed hands in 1492 and from the 16th -17th  century. the book was in N. Italy, as confirmed by notes on its pages. In the National Museum there is a Department of Natural History, with birds and fossils of Sarajevo and a Department of Geology with rocks. (Zmaja od Bosne 3,  www.zemaljskimuzej.ba)

  • Historical Museum

Old building with two floors full of photographs, objects etc. related to the War (1992-1995). At the entrance the stained glass window titled "Death to Fascism, Freedom to the People"»"( 1966) is by the Yugoslav painter Vojo Dimitrijevic (1910-1980), (Zmaja od Bosne 5, maja od from National Museum, on the right bank)

  • Cathedral of the Sacred Heart or Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (1889)

He is also known as Sarajevo Cathedral (Bosnian:  Sarajevo Cathedral). It is the largest Catholic church in BiH (dimensions 41.9X 21.3 m.) and the seat of the Archbishop. It was built by the famous architect, Josip Vancas (1859-1932) in Neo-Gothic style with Romanesque Revival elements. The rose window, above the main entrance, is part of the Flag of Sarajevo Canton and the Romanesque Towers of Coat of arms. It was placed outside the Church in 2014 (when it was canonized), the  Statue of the Pope John Paul II, who during the siege of the city took a pro-Sarajevo position.   • Orthodox Cathedral or Saborna church u Sarajevo (1868)

Dedicated to Nativity of the Virgin Mary It is one of the largest Orthodox churches in the Balkans (37.0 x 22.5 m). It was built by order of the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Aziz from donations of wealthy merchants from Dubrovnik, Belgrade etc. It is in Neo-Baroque style, type of three-aisled basilica, cruciform with 5 domes. In 1999 the church was renovated by the Greek Government. It is located next to the School of Economics, on the right side of Miljacka (Zelenih beretki 1, opposite the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart)

  • Sarajevo Museum 1878–1918

The entire history of Sarajevo from 1878 – 1918, during the Austro-Hungarian period (Zelenih beretki 1, next to the Latin Bridge, on the right bank, muzejsarajeva.ba)

  • National Gallery (1946)

Contains over 6,000 works of art by Bosnian artists (Zelenih beretki 8, on the right bank)

  • Town Hall or Vijećnica (1894)

It was built by the Austrian architect Alexander Wittek (1852-1894) during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is in a pseudo-Moorish style, with red and yellow stones and characteristic parallel lines. During the bombing of 1992-5 the building was seriously damaged but was subsequently renovated. Today it is the National and University Library (next to the river, on the right bank).

  • National Government Building or Building Presidency of BiH (1886)

It was built by the architect, Josip Vancas (he also built the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart). It constitutes National Monument (Maršala Tita 16, Municipality Center, on the right bank)

  • Ars Aevi Collection-Museum of Contemporary Art

It is located in the multi-purpose hall, Center Skenderija, in the building Dom Young, but it looks more like a "modern warehouse" (Terezije bb). The New Museum of Contemporary Art the famous architect has taken over Renzo Piano

  • Memorial to the Children Killed in the Bosnian War (1992-5)

The Monument is dedicated to 521 children from Bosnia, Serbia, Croatia, etc. who lost their lives during the Bosnian War (in Valiki Park, Maršala Tita).

  • Avaz Twist Tower

The skyscraper was built by the architect Faruk Kapidzic within 2 years (2006-2008) for the Bosnian newspaper, Dnevni avaz. It is 176 m high, 32,000 m2 , a rotating glass facade and one of the fastest elevators in Europe (5 m. per second). It belongs to the 10 most beautiful torsion buildings in the world, according to a special committee of the German group "« Schüco» (the world's largest manufacturers of aluminum systems). It is a tourist attraction as the view of the city from its top is magnificent (Tešanjska 24A, Marijin Dvor area, on the right side of the river, opening hours: 7 a.m. -11 p.m.)

  • Svrzo House

Annex of Sarajevo Museum, is a representative example of the architecture of a mansion from the Ottoman period. The Svrzo's House represents the lifestyle of an urban Muslim family (late 18th century)th -early 19th). Authentic furniture, carpets, curtains, objects from that era (Glođina 8, on the right bank).

  • Museum Tunnel Dobrinja – Butmir 

A tunnel 720 m long and 1.5-1.8 m high, built in 1992, under the airport. During the siege of Sarajevo, it was used to supply the residents with war material and food. It was known as the "action"«Tunnel», an action that lasted until the end of the war (BA, 1 Tuneli, airport area, open daily: 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.)

SARAJEVO – NEW TOWN – NEW GRAD

Most of the buildings from the Ottoman period and the Austro-Hungarian Empire were bombed during the Bosnian War (1992-1995). Gradually, most of them were completely reconstructed as they are a tourist attraction and part of the country's cultural heritage. Many private buildings in the Old Town still remain half-destroyed or with visible marks from bullets and bombs.

The New City is trying to become a modern European capital with beautiful houses, skyscrapers, shopping malls, etc.

           

The Bosmal City Center (Bosnian: Bosmalov gradski centar) was built in 2006 and is a 118 m high skyscraper, with offices, residences, restaurants and shops such as Oriflame cosmetics (Milana Preloga 12A, New Town, Sarajevo).

SARAJEVO – FOOD

The Mula Mustafa Bašeskije, the Aščiluk, the Sarači, the Marshal Tita and the surrounding streets have fast food restaurants but with traditional dishes. Many modern cafés and restaurants can be found mainly on Štrosmajerova, Ferhadija, Muvekita streets and in the alleys. The restaurants are divided into aščinicas, buregdžiničas and čevapdžinicas (Fast Food).

The national dish is Cevapi or Cevapcici (kebab, meat mainly from beef) served with ajvar (red pepper) and onion on a traditional Bosnian bun (pie)

To the ash tree They serve traditional dishes such as :

  • Sarajevo Sahan: stuffed tomatoes etc. vegetables, with meat and rice
  • Bosnian pot: braised meat and vegetables such as cabbage, carrots, potatoes with spices, cloves, cinnamon and hot pepper
  • Sogan dolma (stuffed onions)
  • Sarma (dolmades with rice or minced meat)

To the buregdžinicas they serve :

  • Pitas: thin puff pastry filled with meat or vegetables. There are 5 types Pitas such as: Burek (with meat), Zeljanica (with spinach), Potato (with potato), Sirnica (with cheese) and Tikvenik (with pumpkin).

To the čevabdžinicas they serve, among other things, the following:

  • Cevapi or Cevapcici: kebab (veal or beef) on a bread or bun (pie) with onions, ajvar (red pepper) and  sour cream.
  • Pljeskavice: burgers (veal, pork and beef) served with sauce and yogurt
  • Klepe (meat ravioli), sudžukice (sausages), Hadzijski or Sitni Cevap (braised meat in small pieces, with eggplant) or other vegetables)
  • Bosnian sweets : cake, baklava, tufahija (boiled apple with sugar and whipped cream), tulumba, kadayif, hurmašice ( butter cookies).
  • Bosnian coffee  (Bosnian: Bosnian Coffee): hot coffee brewed in a pot (like Turkish coffee)

Some of the city's restaurants that stand out :

  • Morića Han, National restaurant, (Sarači 25, Baščaršija, Old Town, www.moricahan.ba). An old inn, "han", originally built in 1551 in Sarajevo, during the Ottoman period and operated as a caravanserai. It burned down many times, like the other buildings in Sarajevo, but was last renovated in 1974. Impressive courtyard, for local food, Bosnian coffee and baklava. There is a traditional carpet shop on site.
  • Inattention kuća, local cuisine (Veliki Alifakovac 1)
  • HS Pivnica Restaurant, at the Sarajevo Brewery Museum (Franjevačka 15)

The 1th Sarajevo brewery founded in 1864 is open to the public for food and plenty of Sarajevsko beer, accompanied by live music.

SARAJEVO – NEARBY ESCAPES

  • Nationalό Vrelo Bosne Park«, the "Bosnian Spring" Public Park, with the source of the river Bosnia, bridges, lakes, ducks and café-restaurants. It is located at the foot of the mountain Igman, in the area Ilidža. on the outskirts of Sarajevo
  • Trebević – MountainProtected Area  (altitude 1,627 m.) It is the closest escape from the city and is therefore a popular excursion spot for residents. Access by cable car, "’Trebević Cable Car», from the Bistrik, on the left side of Miljacka (distance by cable car 8 minutes from the city center)
  • Igman – Mountain (altitude 1,510 m.) Popular destination for mountain biking, with many forest trails for hiking, skiing, etc.
  • Bjelasnica -Olympic Mountain Ski Centre (altitude 67 m.) Located SW of Sarajevo, next to the mountain IGMAN, at a distance of 20' from the city. In Ski Center Bjelasnica were made 14the Winter Olympics. Access: via Hadzici or of the Krupac (near the airport)
  • Johorin – Ski Center (altitude 916 m.) It belongs to Dinaric Alps with the highest peak Ogorjelica. It is 2.th highest mountain after Bjelasnica and has the most modern ski center in the country, as well as sports events held here by the  14th Winter Olympics. The mountain was a battlefield in the 1992-5 war so you should be careful of mines (25 km SE of Sarajevo, near the city Pale, via E761)
  • Waterfalls Grasshopper. Tourist attraction, (in Bosnian means grasshopper), 98 m high in a forest, with café-restaurants (12 km N. from Sarajevo, access by bus, taxi or on foot)
  • Bijambare Nature Park. Dense coniferous forest, known for its complex of underground caves, such as the Gornja Cave (Upper Cave), the Srednja Cave (the middle part, the most impressive, 470 m long) and the Donja Cave (the lower one). It is located between the villages of Nišići and Krivajevići, area of the Municipality Ilijaš, NE of Sarajevo.
  • Bosnian Pyramids Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun. It is a complex of "pyramids" that is, pyramid-like hills, 12,000 years old, known as  Pyramid of the Sun, Pyramid of the Moon etc.

PYRAMID OF THE SUN

They are located near the city Visoko, NW of Sarajevo, the medieval capital of Bosnia. The locals maintain the myth of the "pyramid" for purely touristic reasons. The Pyramid of the Sun is a cone-shaped hill with 3 fronts, the north, the east and the west. The Pyramid of the Moon It is square in shape, made of sandstone and is 190 m high. (Visoko, distance 30 km from Sarajevo).

  • Lukomir , traditional village (altitude 1,469 m.) It is the highest inhabited village in the country where time has stopped. It is known for the authentic way of life of the inhabitants, as they live in huts and eat what they produce. You will find water from a spring and the few inhabitants will offer you Bosnian café. Access is difficult, by dirt road (only in the summer months, 50 km from Sarajevo, mountain  Bjelasnica).

  • Bus 31E: Vijećnica (Town Hall) – Dobrinja (every 15' to airport, duration approximately 35'), departure from City Hall (Old Town Hall) until the stop Dobrinja (relatively close to the airport and the cheapest transportation to and from the airport). Buses run daily and coincide with the flight schedule. The ticket costs 5 BAM (one way) or  8 BAM  (with return)

  • The Trolleybus  Sarajevo has 6 lines: 101,102,103,104,107,108 and 30 stations. The lines are:

Trolleybus 101 : Otoka – Trg Austrije

Trolleybus 102: Otoka – Jezero

Trolleybus 103: Trg Austrije – Dobrinja (every 5 minutes to the airport, duration approximately 35 minutes)
