OR Skyros geographically located on Sporades, where it is the largest island, but administratively belongs to Euboea. Its shape looks like 2 islands adjacent to the point between the settlements Kalamitsa and Achilles. OR Skyros town, to NE. is built amphitheatrically, under the Castle and abbey St. Georgiou. It is approximately from the port 10 Km.

SKYROS - SIGHTS

Castle - Ancient Acropolis

The Castle is located on a high rock 179 m. where ruins of the Medieval and Ottoman Period are preserved. Inside you will see one medieval dhexamen (14,80Χ9,20Χ70 μ.), also known locally as the "dark prison", because the building has no windows.

On its wall of the ancient Acropolis, ruins of 4 semicircular towers, The "Agios Nikolaos Tower" and "Agia Paraskevi Tower»Στα Α., The "Paleopyrgos»In the B.. and "Pergos»In D..

NW. the three-storey Byzantine Tower with the built-in lion, was the residence of the lord-guardian of the Castle, according to the inscription on the entrance that reads "By the Reverend George of Haitelis".

The Tower is the only entrance to the Castle, to 1^The level which is the Church of St. George.

Then crossing Agios Georgios you will reach 2^The level with the medieval tank and the Episcopal Church.

Access : from the central parking lot, near the hill of Fourka, the cemetery and the police station. Here you will have to leave the car and continue on foot (caution you should wear non-slip shoes). The view from the Castle is magnificent to the beaches of Magazia, Mole, Cigars, Shooting etc., open daily 10:30 am-8pm.

Church of Panagia Episkopi (895 A.D.)-Assumption of Mary Castle

You will see ruins of the temple and some murals (11^th -12^th). Has been seat Ebishop until 1827. The 1841 the church collapses after an earthquake and ceases to be an Episcopal church of the island.

Monastery of Agios Georgios, Castle, Country

You will find the Monastery of Agios Georgios at 1^Thelevel of the Castle.

The current Katholikon of the Monastery was built at the end 16^th authorities 17^th century. and is a complex four-column cruciform inscribed with beautiful frescoes (18^th). In the part of the old Katholikon (10^th ) his frescoes were found 13^th century. From 1289 constitutes part of the Monastery of the Great Lavra of Mount Athos. Saint George of Skyros, is the patron saint of the island and the inhabitants believe that the Saint protected them from the great earthquake that struck the island on 26-7-2001. open daily 10 am.-12:30 noon & 6 pm-8 pm. Exhibits from the excavations on the island, from the Early Helladic Period (2800 -1900 B.C) until the Roman Years. You will see ceramics, pottery, sculptures, architectural members, finds from the Temple of Apollo at Fourka and the folklore collection L.. Ethnological & Folklore Museum of Manos – Anastasia Faltaic, Brook Square, Country

Founded in 1964 from Mano Faltaic to the old mansion of "Faldai", located in the NE. edge of town, in Viglatoria of Paleopyrgos. In the collections of the Museum you will see the famous Skyrian textiles and embroideries (which are also available at the Benaki Museum in Athens), Skyrian wood carvings (the Skyrian chair also exists in the collections of the Benaki Museum), Skyrian ceramics, Traditional costumes, bridal attire (19^th ), Skyrian shepherd costume with trolleys (traditional sandals). You will also see the costumes of the "bells", from the famous Skyros Carnival, such as that of "Old man».

More works by the painter and author Manos Faltaits (1938-2012), sculptures and rare editions of books concerning the island.

Skyros town, NE. Island's

Built under the Castle, with narrow cobbled streets, beautiful mansions, stores, restaurants, bar.

OR Great Army starts from the main square and ends at the junction for Brook and Castle square.

in Heroes Square of Chora, just outside of town hall and Stores you will see works of the famous sculptor from Skyros, Georgiou Lambrou. You will also see his works at the Benaki Museum, at the National Gallery, in private collections etc..

Famous square in Chora is Brook Square or Eternal Poetry Square. Build it 1931 and is dedicated to the English poet and philhellene Rupert Brooke (Rupert Brook, 1887-1915). It stands out with the naked statue of the young man (It is said that the then infamous Alexandros Iolas posed), work of the sculptor from Andros, Michalis Tombrou (1889-1974).

Brooke was sailing with the British Mediterranean Expeditionary Force (APP.), near the bay Treis Boukes in the N.. of Skyros, when he died suddenly of rot 1915 (27 years). Because the Expeditionary Force had to continue its course, was buried the same day in an olive grove near Three Mouthpieces, where and his tomb. The view from Brook Square is magnificent, ideal for sunset.

at Flax the hill above the port (to Kalamitsa) you will find his church Saint Nicola's.

It is located after Molos and next to Ancient Quarry. Sandy, with the backdrop of the impressive stones "puria", the north catches her intensely.

Palamari, Β.-ΒΑ., to Rough

Next to Prehistoric Settlement there is quiet beach, sand and pebbles. Access : from asphalt road to Trachy and after a dirt road.

The butcher's shop of the family of Georgios Tzanos Mavrikos, where you will taste meats and cheeses from their farm. Aspous & Achilles, A., near Chora, to the SE.

Easy access from the main road, in the distance 6 km from Linaria. The fertile valley of the wider area, Kalamitsa and Loutro, is due to the Kalamitsa Wetland. If you come to N.. to see Brooke's tomb then continue to Renes Beach. Quiet, with pebbles and protected as it is located in a closed bay (Chora-Renes approx 18 km).

Theot beachόκος Port, B. near the airport

15 August – Representation of a Skyrian Wedding

During Wedding custom the families of the bride and groom pass by the houses and offer them invited pancakes with honey instead of Invitation.

Halloween - Skyrian Carnival

It is one of the most popular traditional carnivals in Greece. Residents disguise themselves as "Old man», «Korels" and "Φράγκους», wandering the streets with bells, they dance and recite verses. The "Old men»Wear , animal skin mask, a black fur cape and many large bells in the middle. He is accompanied by "Corella», a man dressed in a traditional women's uniform and mask and the "Φράγκος», wearing plain pants and having a large bell hanging behind him. The purpose is by walking the "bells», to make noise while dancing. According to legend, this custom is related to an elderly shepherd who lost all his sheep from the severe winter and to inform this fact to the inhabitants, put the bells from the sheep in the middle and he and his wife were walking in the alleys of the island making noise about the misfortune that befell them.

The highlight of the Skyros Carnival, is the custom of Trata made on last Sunday of Carnival.

A trawl (boat) on wheels, is placed in the central square of Chora and the residents disguised as sailors satirize the news by saying verses. The celebration ends on Shrove Monday with celebrations.

Riding with Skyrian ponies
