Atokos Ithakis, the virgin island of the Ionian

THE Atokos is a small island (4 km²), rocky, with wild beauty, and virgin vegetation. It is at Ionian Sea, NE. of Ithaca, to which it belongs administratively (It is 10 nm. from the capital of Ithaca, deep).

It belongs to the Network NATURE 2000 by name "Interior Archipelago Ionian, Meganisi, Bear, Atokos, Dirt, (Code. GR 2220003) with remarkable seabed (Poseidonia) and rare species of flora. In the sea area it often appears common dolphin (The dolphin thirds). The seals monachus monachus find shelter in the caves of the coastline as in Fokospilia.

The island is uninhabited, private (belongs to the Tsakou shipowner family) and is for sale. Stan. there are small sinuses while in D. and B. steep cliffs and sea caves. in A. is the most popular bay for boats as it is protected by NW. winds. It is a beautiful bay also known as "One House Bay», with the only building on the island, obviously the home of the owners.

It has a large beach with white pebbles, deep blue-green waters and the church of Agios Ioannis (open) with a well (brackish water). There are some goats on the island that make their appearance here, on the big beach.

Stan. of the island is another bay known as "Cliff Bay», with a small beach, deep waters and an impressive rock. The bay is protected from local NW. winds for this is approached by many private boats but also by boats that make organized cruises. Also in N. there is a smaller creek where boats dock.

THE Atokos, with its impressive rocky shoreline is an ideal destination for exploring the seabed with a respirator or for fishing.
