Polyegos or Polyaegos, the Fairytale Island of the Cyclades

The island Polyegos (Polyegos) or Polyaigos (many goats goats =) or Ypolyvos or Polybos located in Cyclades and administratively belongs to Kimolos.

It's the biggest uninhabited Aegean island with area 18,146 km and a coastline 27 Km. The island is rocky, with low hills, of approximately 310 m., coves with small beaches and a small plain somewhere in its center.

POLYEGOS - BEACHES

Exotic beaches attract luxury yachts, yacht, sailing boats and many private boats that do sea tours from the neighboring islands (Kimolos, milo, Sifnos).

Myrsini beach or Pano Myrsini, Arcos beach Manolonisi Kimolos.

It is the most popular beach of the island and is located directly opposite Kimolos. It features white sand, calm turquoise waters and in the summer it is flooded with expensive boats, well protected from the north winds.

It is located a little further S. from Pano Myrsini beach and is a long strip of white sand with wonderful waters.

Blue Waters – Blue Bay, SW.

Small beach with exotic beauty, white sand, crystal clear waters and steep cliffs above. It is considered one of the most beautiful beaches of the Cyclades.

Beach with calm turquoise waters, inside a very closed bay, which looks like a swimming pool.

Volcanic landscape, rocks, white and pink pebbles, green waters and an impressive seabed with white sand.

Near the ruins of the old mines, in Kalogeroi bay, you will find a small beach where you can swim.

The N. part of the island is the most photographed and all cruise ships and sea tours make a mandatory stop here. It has reefs and sharp rocks, including the famous Indian totem, that emerge from the sea and look like sailing vessels with open sails.

NW. of the island you will find many small coves with small beaches, while its church dominates the top of the hill Panagia Polyviatissa (from the name of Polybus, one of the names of the island). It was built 1622 as a monastery, the ruins of the old cells can still be seen, and is dedicated to Assumption of Mary (15/8). Access to the church is from Panagia beach also known as the "Panagias t'avlaki».

The letter B. part is rocky and you will find a small beach exposed to the north and several caves to explore. The impressive Cave of Fanara, it is an open cave with beautiful turquoise water where you can swim (excursion boats stop here only if the weather permits).

Ammoura beach – Lighthouse Bay, NE.

Colored pebbles, tamarisk trees for shade and some wild goats walking along the shore. The area has a lot of vegetation as a lake forms behind the beach that holds the water of the stream. If you are coming by private excursion boat, from the Sifnos, or 1^or stance is on bight Faros.

THE Lighthouse Polyaigos (Lantern or Lantern) worked for 1^or time 1897, with an energy source oil. It remained extinguished during WWII. and restarted it 1945, again with oil. It is a circular high tower 9 m. (total height 138 m.) with lighthouse keeper's house and access from Ammoura beach and then by rough path (duration 30 ').

POLYAIGOS – HOW TO GET THERE

Is located 1,7 nm. in tO. of Kimolos, 3,77 nm. A. of Milos, 8,76 nm. ND. of Sifnos and 11,5 nm. NW. of Folegandros. You will arrive by your own boat, rental or choose one with an organized excursion from Kimolos and the port of Psathi, the Apple, from the ports of Adamas and Pollonia and from Sifnos from Platy Gialos Marina in SW direction., passing through the Sifnos - Kitrianis strait (rock island).

USEFUL INFORMATION ABOUT POLYEGOS ISLAND

It belongs to the Network NATURE 2000 (code GR4220006), the habitat 2250* the South Aegean Region, together with the islands of Milos, Naxos and Rhodes. The habitat 2250* refers to 'Coastal dunes gift Juniperus (cedar)» and have been recorded 32 endemic, rare or even endangered species.

Endangered species of fauna such as the endemic are also found on the island blue lizard (Podarcis milensis), rare endemic Milos Viper (Microvipera schweizeri), The Falcons (hawk) (Eleonora's Falcon) and Bonelli (Hieraaetus fasciatus). The Mediterranean seal monachus monachus she chooses sandy shores to give birth to her babies.
