Limnionas – Mills – Horseshoe, beaches of Evia overlooking the Sporades

THE Limnionas he is in Central Evia, towards his side Aegean, and belongs to Municipality of Dirfio - Messapia. It is 120 km from the Athena and is accessed from Copper (45 km), Nea Artaki, Searching, Short despot, Hagia Sophia (25 km, going up to Dirfy on a road with many turns and in some places bad road surface).

Limnionas : small coastal settlement, with a long beach, tavernas for fresh fish and accommodation for rent.

Limniona beach : dark gravel, not regulated, tamarinds for shade, rocks and caves to explore. It is ideal for swimming when there is no north, and when the atmosphere is clear the Alonissos and the Skyros. It is preferred by many who want to do free camping (the law prohibits it) and those with caravans.

Behind the high rock with the cave, 50 m. from tavern Madeleine, you will find a small beach with beach bar (Access by foot).

The settlement welcomes visitors all year round, who prefer it for good food and for trips to Dirfy. Indicatively they remain open, winter summer, the accommodation A stonemason Guest House (tel. : 694 522 8873, https://www.lithoktiston.gr), and the Madalena tavern (with fireplace and excellent food, tel. : 22280 23435).

Mills -former Katounia (nothing to do with Katunia near Lake Evia) : small settlement B. of Limniona (paved road), with few inhabitants and deer roaming freely in the village among the tourists.

You will find the traditional steakhouse-cafe-grocery shop «Marditsa», a shop that goes from generation to generation (from 1952). Period decoration, homemade food from Mrs. Efi (at the top mutton burger, lamb chops, braised goat, cheesecake), and organic red wine of their production, sweets, honey etc. (openly : winter only SK, and May – September daily, tel. : 22280 22110).

In the sights of Mills or church of Agios Ioannis Prodromos or Katuniotis, with festival 29 August. The prevailing custom is as follows : Saturday morning, in the Miracle of the Baths of Agios Theodoros of Tironos (mobile feast, the first Saturday of Lent) locals carry, by foot, the image of the Saint in Searching (about 35 km), and it is welcomed by one of the three parishes of Psachni (different every year). The image remains there for 40 days, until Saturday of Lazarus and returns back in the same way.
Mylon beach : very small beach, 800 m. from Myloi village, at the end of the gully below the cliff, with parking space. Access on foot or by car from a dirt road (in winter the road is very bad but in summer it is paved and you can reach the beach relatively well).
Sarakiniko : after Mylos on a very bad dirt road (access to Sarakinito is normally from the village of Pili).
Petali beach : small beach, N. of Limniona (20’), after Akti beach, with easy access from a passable dirt road. Wild beauty, impressive vertical cliffs and a cave. It gathers a lot of people and mostly free campers (we remind you that it is prohibited). For food you will find the tavern – brownThe Horseshoe», with rooms for rent, in the beach (open only in summer months).

From Petali beach or right at the fork as you come from Limniona (bypassing Petali) going up towards the villages Win, Goats and Cherry (before the Wild fig) you will find in the middle of nowhere, the country house tavern – butcher shop «The Cheligas» (about 35' from Limniona, 8 Km passable dirt road). Famous tavern of the area (in the summer the buses are queuing), with amazing food, meats from their farm (which is next to the tavern), cheeses their production and fresh vegetables by their garden. Try cheesecake with their own slice, venison stew, calf, short calf or lamb, wild boar (also gives a package).

In the tavernThe Cheligas» you can come directly from Copper and Nea Artaki passing through Agios Athanasios village and Col Agalis to Glyfada (asphalt, 45 km northeast. from Chalkida, there is a sign for "O Tseligas" tavern, 300 m. a passable dirt road starts before the tavern).

Petalis Gorge : mountaineering route 4 km that starts 200 m. from the tavern «The Cheligas» (it has been configured by the owner) and reaches up to Petali beach (altitude difference 300 m., difficult). Impressive gorge with many waterfalls and only for experienced climbers as a ladder is required in some places.
