Neck, the Little Captain Village that Produces the Famous Mani Salt Flower

Neck Messinian Mani : beautiful seaside settlement with captain's houses, built with local stone, and a picturesque harbor with fishing boats.

You will find her 55 km SE. of Kalamata, following the coastal road Saint Dimitrios – Oitylo, after Agios Dimitrios Selinitsa, below the village Dingle Western Mani. A stop to relax in the small square, overlooking the harbor and the sunset, is required.

Arvanitsa, Boeotia, ice cream, traditional food and fresh fish, from the boats, you will find in the two taverns of the village :

seashore, tel. : 27210 98075, open from the beginning of May – the end of November. Cooked, roasts of the hour and small fresh fish (fry, anchovy, sprat), salted with Salt Flower Mani, which the owner collects from the rocks (ask if there is any available for purchase as harvest is weather dependent each time).

The Neck it has no beaches as the coastline is rocky. It has an ideal seabed for exploration, with mask and respirator, rocks for diving or fishing and three caves, in the position of Nupantis, just outside the village (to Oitylo).

Place Platy Helidoni

Source of life for the region Mani salt, known in the trade as Salt blossom Mani or Afrina (the upper part of the salt). It is natural iodized salt, without chemical additives, is collected in the traditional way, with hands and spoons, from the rocks of Trachila and is considered a gourmet product. You will find it in Trachila, the ladies of the village dispose of it in bags (ask in the taverns and they will tell you) and in the local grocery stores.

SNAP – NEARBY ATTRACTIONS

Cave Refuge, 3,5 km Δ. settlement Saint Dimitrios Selinitsas (or Selinitsa) Western Mani, next to Katafigio Village accommodation, before the Neck. Three-story cave, still largely unexplored (the investigation began the 1953), it is considered one of the largest caves in Greece (about 1.600 m.). Stalactites and labyrinthine arcades through which flowed an underground river that had an exit at the present entrance of the cave. Caving excursions are organized, up to a point, from local mountaineering clubs, such as E.O.S. Kalamata https://www.eoskal.gr , EOS. Sparta https://eosspartis.gr. On the impressive marble slabs, outside the cave, you can lie down to sunbathe or take a bath on the rocks, in front of the cave. The cave Refuge has been refuge for locals, mainly during the period of the Turkish occupation.

Dingle or Lagada West Mani

Traditional settlement, built amphitheatrically above Trachila, with stone houses of Maniatic architecture and a wonderful view. Among the sights is the Byzantine church of the Transfiguration of the Savior (14^th), monument, the church of Iisodion Theotokos and the Kapitsinou Tower. Here you will find grocery stores with traditional products such as oil, olives, honey, soaps with olive oil, herbs, jams etc.
